Lena Liebich

Postdoctoral Fellow, Harvard Business School AI Institute

I am a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Digital Reskilling Lab at the Harvard Business School AI Institute and a Research Affiliate of the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE. Before joining HBS, I completed my PhD in Economics at the Graduate School of Economics, Finance and Management at Goethe University Frankfurt, supervised by Christine Laudenbach and Michael Kosfeld.

During my PhD, I visited the Department of Decisions, Operations and Technology at CUHK Business School, Hong Kong, and the Centre for Brain, Mind and Markets at the University of Melbourne.

My research primarily investigates how humans can effectively collaborate with AI systems to improve decision quality in organizations undergoing technological change – combining perspectives from Economics and Information Systems. I particularly focus on the role of design features of the AI, such as providing explanations of its prediction logic (explainable AI), in shaping users’ beliefs, thought processes and behavior.

In a second strand of my research, my co-authors and I design a natural field experiment to test the effectiveness of evidence-based behavioral interventions in motivating debt repayment behavior.

Across my projects, I apply a behavioral lens designing and conducting a variety of incentivized behavioral experiments (online, lab-in-the-field, field) and large-scale surveys - often in collaboration with industry partners across sectors (e.g. real estate, banking, fintech).
